The most recent development of the Bruce II Sports Centre was the renovation of a lobby area in 2004 to develop a fitness centre.

At the time, it was uncertain of the exact demand for such a facility, but in five short years has become overwhelmed with the usage rate by residents.

Currently, the small facility houses three treadmills, two elliptical trainers, two stationary bicycles, one Stairmaster and two weight consoles.

With such tremendous activity at the fitness centre, the Town has recently undertaken an expansion of the facility that entails the construction of a second floor above the curling rink to accommodate an expanded fitness centre that will house additional equipment and offerings to residents.

The development of flooring above the curling rink will provide an additional 465 square meters (5000 square feet) of space to the facility. This will provide ample space for the expansion of the fitness centre, while providing leisure space that can be utilized for various other groups that now compete for available spacing (including aerobics, group meetings, Thai Kwan Doe and pilates).

The Fitness Centre offers:
• Treadmills
• Exercise Bikes
• Arc Trainers
• Stepper
• Multi-Stations
• Weight Room
• Indoor Track

During the winter season group users include the Port aux Basques Minor Hockey Association, Port aux Basques Figure Skating Club, Molson Recreational Hockey, Labatt Gentlemen’s Hockey League, and the Port aux Basques Mariners hockey team among others. Curling

The origins of the Gateway Curling Club began at the former Bruce Arena where the club curled on the rink surface of the arena. With a growing popularity in the community, the Bruce II Sports Centre design included two dedicated curling sheets, as well as a beautiful lounge area and bar. The curling facility is also equipped with two overhead cameras to view the action at the other end of the sheet.

The Gateway Curling Club has league play for Men’s, Women’s, Mixed and Juniors. The Junior Curling Club boasts one of the highest enrollments numbers in the province. As a growing sport within the community, there are approximately 90 full time senior members to complement the 30 junior members.

The Bruce II Sports Centre has two conference rooms available in the facility. The Multi-Purpose Room is a 50’x30’ room that overlooks the ice rink and can accommodate up to 180 people.

This room is often used as a hospitality room for visiting teams during hockey tournaments, host to fitness classes and centre for conferences. The second conference room available is the curling viewing room which overlooks the curling sheets. This room is 35’x22’ and accommodates approximately 100 people.

Both meeting facilities can be arranged with available tables and chairs to form any type of meeting setup. The facility has digital and overhead projectors, screens, wireless internet, a public address sound system and flip charts. Both rooms are available any time of the year for birthday parties, meetings, conferences, or fitness classes. Contact the staff at the Bruce II to make your booking.

An addition to the Bruce II Sports Centre, the pool was constructed 2002 and quickly became a welcomed amenity to the community. After nearly 20 years since the former pool was closed, the new facility has been embraced by all residents. The pool has certified lifeguards on duty at all times with swim lanes, a waterslide, hot tub and swim aides available.

The Bruce II Sports Centre pool is also home to the Port aux Basques Piranha Swim Club. This organization is an all age group that began in 2003. Membership has grown since inception to include over 20 swimmers ranging in age from 6 to 18. The Piranha Swim Club is a non-profit organization operated under the direction of a volunteer executive and coaches, with programs running from September to May of each year. The club is a member of Swim Newfoundland and Labrador and Swim Canada.
